Tarragona, Spain: Old Stones and Flowers

I feel so at home in southern Spain - the sense of history, the warmth, the narrow streets, the outdoor lifestyle, the flowers, the attention to detail. I hope that my photographs can at least partially share my passion for this wonderful part of the world.

History
The Mediterranean was the centre of civilization for many, many, many centuries. Tarragona was a political and trade centre during the Roman empire, and there are still traces of it today in the Roman walls and gates, the ampitheatre and other relics.

North Americans are infatuated with everything new and shiny - new housing estates, monster homes with four-car garages. The old streets of European cities are not always pretty, but the patina of age is rich in character and history.

As I walk the cobblestone streets, I take my place alongside past generations who walked there before me. Current political debates or personal heartbreak are absorbed in something larger than any one person or generation.

Outdoor Life
My father is always said that "man" should not live where bougainvillea does not grow, and the cold, harsh climate of Saskatchewan is alien to me in many ways. I rejoice in hazelnut ice cream at an outdoor patio, outdoor flower and vegetable displays, the irises and jasmine in bloom. The main street of downtown Tarragona leads to a seafront terrace and promenade - a wonderful spot for a stroll before dinner.


The outdoor lifestyle isn't always neat and tidy - there is laundry hanging from the balconies - but it is alive. People don't hide away inside their cave homes. The narrow streets make driving difficult, but they encourage people to walk, to stop to chat with their neighbours.

Old Stones
Despite their imperfections, these old walls far more attractive than vinyl siding.


Colour
The colours come to life under the Mediterranean sun - rich blue walls, vibrant red geraniums.


Attention to Detail
There were some wonderful gargoyles and stone carvings inside and outside the cathedral. Such talented craftsman and such attention to detail. Who would have guessed that heavenly dogs play the accordeon!


Flowers
Sunshine and flowers. Irises are in bloom at the moment.


The cathedral cloister was a quiet, peaceful spot.

Spelt and Millet: Ancient Grains for Today's Healthy Diet

When I was growing up, whole wheat flour and rice were exotic options. Now we have a whole range of intriguing choices – buckwheat, spelt, millet, kamut – the list goes on and on. My problem is that I don’t know very much about some of these grains, so I arranged a phone call with Nicole Davis, the Owner/Manager of Daybreak Mill near Estevan. Daybreak Mill grows and processes approximately 18 different kinds of flour, whole and de-hulled grains, flakes, cereals, and legumes. Beer: History, Trivia and War

Brew North by Ian Coutts is a fascinating look at the history of beer in Canada. I particularly enjoyed the archival photos and beer labels. Here are some tidbits from Canada’s brewing history:           In 2007, Canadians drank 71.67 litres per capita with the Yukon leading the way at 139.75 litres per person, followed by Alberta at 98.54      The first criminal trial and hanging in Upper Canada was held at Finkle’s Tavern, which opened near Bath, Ontario, in 1793.      Two skeletons at the bar were props for Charles McKiernan’s tall tales (told in rhyme) at Joe Beef’s Canteen in Montreal. Customers shared the bar with a variety of animals, including a succession of beer-drinking bears.      Empty beer bottles were originally stored in crates filled with straw, a favourite spot for mice to nest. Artisan Cheese-Making in Saskatchewan

Travel in Europe and you are immediately struck by the number and variety of local cheeses, but then you come home to Saskatchewan and there are next to no local artisan cheeses, but that situation is about to change. ( Salayview Farm south of Regina has just started making an excellent fresh goat cheese.) The Saskatchewan Food Industry Development Centre Inc. (Food Centre) held a two-day cheese-making workshop this past week, and it was filled to capacity with people who were eager to start making cheese as a hobby or to sell commercially. The course was led by Margaret Morris of Glengarry Cheesemaking and Erin Hiebert, the Food Centre’s Manager of Skills Development and Food Safety Programs, while Brev Chesky, the Centre’s Processing Director, assisted with the hands-on portion of the workshop.
