Hunter Gatherer Vegetarian Diner at 1221 15th Avenue, Regina, will be open to the public at 7 am, July 26. Hours of operation will be Monday-Saturday, 7 am – 8 pm and Sunday 9 am – 3 pm. Hours will be extended once they have a liquor licence.

Saskatoon Berry Festival, July 23 & 24

The Saskatoon Farmers’ Market is hosting its first ever Saskatoon Berry Festival at the Saturday, July 23, and Sunday, July 24, markets. And it’s going to be fun!

Berry Good Food 
Start the weekend off right by joining Chef Jenni for a saskatoon berry-filled brunch at 9 am, July 23. Vegetarian options are available and most items are gluten-friendly.

Following the brunch, Chef Jenni will be demonstrating 6 different berry recipes. There will be samples and recipe cards.

If your mouth starts watering at the thought of saskatoon berry pie, never fear. There will be lots of those available from folks like Riverbend Plantation Market Café that sells freshly baked as well as frozen, bake-at-home pies all year round.

There will be a pie sale on Saturday and Sunday with proceeds going to The Friendship Inn.

But don’t stop at pie. Saskatoon berries are delicious in so many different sweet and savory dishes. Watch out for jam, ice cream, mustard, and chutney – not to mention fresh berries.

At least 20 Market vendors will be offering special berry products – from treats for your dog to chocolate to soap to liqueur. Watch out for the purple balloons and signs indicating the participating vendors.

Lily Festival at Black Fox Farm and Distillery

Festival of India, July 23
The Hindu Society of Saskatchewan is holding a Festival of India from 5-8 pm, July 23, in Meewasin Park. There will be a parade, dance and theater performances, henna artists, and vegetarian food. Everyone is welcome.

Vodka Options
Regina’s Birmingham Vodka & Ale House has opened a branch in Saskatoon at 109-810 Circle Drive East.

Hungry Kids
The Salvation Army’s Food on the Move program expects to feed lunches to over 8,000 kids this summer when there are no school lunch programs. Lunch will be delivered to 12 locations: White Buffalo Youth Lodge, Ashworth Holmes Park, A.H. Browne Park, Dr. Seager Wheeler Park, Archibald McDonald Park, Mount Royal Park, Pleasant Hill Park, St. Mary's Wellness Centre, St. Andrew's Park, St. John's School Park, Broughton Park, and Optimist Park.

“Wow!’ is the first word out of my mouth, upon visiting the new Peter McKee Community Food Centre in Moncton this week. The freshly painted, bright and spacious building feels more like a modern coffee shop or neighbourhood market than what might normally come to mind when picturing a local “food bank’." There’s a community garden, a large food storage area, a children’s play area, and they plan to add a teaching kitchen and a thrift store. The Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre is interested in moving in this direction.

The Latest Crop in the Local Food Movement – Wheat
A California-based pasta company has started labelling its wheat with the exact varietal and the farm where it was grown. “Modern American farmers did not invent the notion that specific varietals of wheat from various geographic regions have different flavors; you can trace the concept back to Italy centuries ago, where each Italian region championed the quality, texture, and taste of their own wheat pasta over all others.” 

Treasure Life Flour Mills in the Creston Valley, BC, grows over 23 varieties of heirloom wheat.

Famous “Italian” Vegetables
Tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant – they’ve become synonymous with Italian cuisine, but these vegetables aren’t native to Italy. Three cheers for the immigrants!

Mesmerizing Diversity
Joseph Simcox travels the world searching for under-utilized and wild food. “Before the European colonialists came here, some 3,000 species of plants were used for food in North America, and this is excluding Mexico. . . . we need to re-examine those useful plants of old so that we can use them in the future. . . . I believe one way is to start by mesmerizing people with diversity. The strategy is to introduce the marvels of food plant diversity to the stores through photos and stories of food traditions past."

Our Farm

Pike Lake Farmers’ Market, July 21
Pike Lake Provincial Park will be hosting vendors from the Saskatoon Farmers' Market from 10am to 2pm, July 21. If it rains, they’ll be in the Rec Centre Hall. Otherwise, look for them outside.

Saskatoon Berry Festival, July 24
Celebrate the history, name, and taste of saskatoon berries at the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market's Saskatoon Berry Festival on July 24. There will be special products and a pie sale with profits going to the Friendship Inn. Participating Riversdale businesses will also be featuring saskatoon berry specials throughout the month leading up to the festival.

Nvigorate – Local, Organic Berry Products
I made a mistake in last week’s Flavourful Saskatoon. Saskatoon Farmers’ Market has had an organic vendor for several years now. Nvigorate’s seabuckthorn products are all certified organic – berries, syrups and jams, drinks, chocolates, and gelato.

Petrofka Orchard
I’m really enjoying Petrofka Orchard’s spicy carrot cake jam. You can find a wide variety of their jams and relishes at McNally Robinson Booksellers and Dad’s Organic Market has their kale chips.

Petrofka Orchard runs weekend tractor tours from 11 am to 3 pm. While you’re out there, you can pick up some fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as all their other products, at the farm store.

How the Cauli Crumbles
Saskatoon Herbs ‘n Health is selling Big Mountain Foods’ Cauli Crumble. Big Mountain Foods is a Vancouver-based company. The Veggie Grounds Cauli Crumble is made from cauliflower, pea protein, split peas, walnuts, red pepper, and spices. It’s flavourful, high in protein, with no GMOs, additives, or major allergens.

Our Farm
Our Farm sells chemical-free fruit and vegetables every Saturday morning in front of St. Joseph’s Hall on Broadway. You can also order online for pick-up or delivery.

Interesting News Stories
Small-scale organic farmers in France have formed a co-operative for mutual support and profit.

The taste of tea is changing due to increased rainfall and unpredictable temperatures. Possible solutions include a diversified forest ecosystem in place of monocultures, organic farming practices, and growing crops from seed not cuttings.

The Perennial restaurant in San Francisco champions carbon farming, has an in-house aquaponics greenhouse, root-to-stem vegetable dishes and wine on tap. Their goal is to start conversations among their diners about using food to fight climate change.

Fermentation Day, July 7
Karma Conscious Café and Eatery is hosting a fermentation day on July 7. There will be workshops from 3-6 pm when you can try your hand at making kimchi, sauerkraut, and other fermented goodies, followed by a Saskatoon Ferments potluck at 6 pm.

Harvest Unwanted Fruit 
Do you have fruit trees with an over-abundance of fruit? Get help with harvesting and share unwanted fruit with others so it doesn’t go to waste. Register your fruit tree online with Out of Your Tree.

New Market Vendors 
I’m excited to learn that some new farmers are joining the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market. Jasmin Engelberts of Divine Organics is the Market’s first certified organic farmer and will be selling fruit and vegetables. Neil Reimer will be selling vegetables.

Be sure to sample the freshly made sugarcane juice from KaroomBu. It’s very tasty.

Rusty Owl Café, Prince Albert 
Rusty Owl Café will be opening on July 8 at 21 River Street West, Prince Albert, and will be open from 8 am to 9 pm. The café has a steampunk theme (imagine computers run by steam engines).

They’ll be serving sweet and savoury Dutch crèpes, Italian stone-baked pizza, French pastries, and soup specials. South African olive oil and Italian balsamic vinegar will feature in many of the menu items. Drinks will include espressos, teas, milkshakes, smoothies, balsamic blasts (carbonated water and flavoured balsamic vinegar), and South African soft drinks.

Café Terra, Eastend 
Café Terra has just opened at 505 Pottery Street, Eastend. They plan to serve food that is as local as possible, including greens and herbs grown on the property.

National Local Food Day
Wayne Stetski, NDP MP for Kootenay-Columbia has introduced a private member’s bill to establish the Friday before Thanksgiving as National Local Food Day.

“According to the Conference Board of Canada, 77% of Canadian consumers think locally produced food is important for their purchasing decisions. Farmers Markets contribute over $3 billion dollars annually to the Canadian economy. ‘As the MP representing the beautiful Kootenay--Columbia region, I am proud to honour Canada's abundance of delicious local food," said Stetski. "A National Local Food Day would recognize the hard work of local producers from coast to coast to coast." 

The Search for Zero-Waste Beer 
It takes a lot of water and energy to make a bottle of beer, but a number of craft breweries are attempting to reduce their environmental footprint.

“The Leeds-based Northern Monk Brew Co has just released what could be the world’s first zero-waste beer – and it tastes incredible. . . . The brew was created using 120 kg of waste pears, croissants and brioche,. Not content with saving food, the beer’s creators have also packaged the beer in 100% recyclable glass and have donated all the hops and malt used in its production to a local farmer for use as feed and fertiliser. The beer’s champagne yeast, meanwhile, is being used in other brews.”

Recipes for Love and Murder by Sally Andrew is a generous serving of food for love, food for healing, food to solve a mystery and find a killer, with recipes and advice for the lovelorn in a small South African town. If you’re a fan of Botswana’s Mma Ramotswe – if you love food – you should definitely read this book.
