Hispanic wines, a new Alehouse, Student Cooks, British Mustard and a Harvest Supper - Enjoy!

The Woods Alehouse is open!
The Woods Alehouse, Paddock Wood Brewing’s new taphouse at 148 2nd Avenue North, opens today, Monday, September 17, at 11 am. There will be a live performance featuring John Cohen at 9 pm. The Woods Alehouse will be serving Paddock Wood beer as well as special kegs from around the world and premium liquor. The September menu is posted on their website and includes lots of beer-flavoured dishes – I look forward to trying it out.

Field to Fork, Regina, Sept. 19
If you’re in Regina, be sure to take part in Field to Fork in Victoria Park from September 19-22. There will be a full day of workshops (e.g. preserving, composting) on Saturday.

Attraversiamo, Sept. 23
Join Chef Jenni for a mobile dinner on September 23. Appetizers will be served at Luna and Hill, while the main course will be across the street at Souleio Foods.

Portuguese & Spanish Wines, Sept. 28
Join Doug Reichel, Fine Wines Sask, for a guided sampling of some 10 Portuguese and Spanish wines at Premier Saskatchewan on Sept. 28. I’ve attended these seminars in the past, and they’re a leisurely, informative way to taste some new wines.

Contact Doug directly if you live in Prince Albert, Regina or Moose Jaw as he will be hosting events in these communities around the same time.

SaskMade Marketplace, Sept. 29
Be sure to visit SaskMade Marketplace on Saturday, September 29, from 11 am to 3 pm to taste Chef Simon Reynolds’ soups, stews and soon-to-be-famous Sticky Toffee Pudding.

Harvest Supper, Sept. 30
The Friends of the Forestry Farm House are holding a Harvest Supper on Sunday, September 30, at the Superintendent’s Residence, Forestry Farm Park. Seatings for the three-course, sit-down dinner are at 5 and 7 pm. Tickets are $25 per person and must be purchased in advance (373-1787, c.bear@sasktel.net).

Student Cooks
There will be no excuses for university students who don’t know how to cook this year. Start from Scratch, a program Dan Clapson introduced in Calgary, is now being offered in Saskatoon. Register online.

For some really classy cooking, students are eligible for a $10 discount on all the cooking classes offered by Simon’s Fine Foods.

Hestia Organics
Hestia Organics has their mill up and running and are now able to sell processed products. Look out for milled flaxseed and stone-ground organic cracked wheat porridge at the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market.

Kalissa Regier talks about trying to connect grain farmers and consumers through the marketplace on this short video for Innovation Week.

Saving English Mustard
Here’s a good news story about a small group of determined farmers who saved English mustard (Colman’s) from disappearing by setting up a mustard growers’ co-operative. (via Saskatoon’s British Chef Simon Reynolds)

I’m going on Holidays!!
I’ll be in Baja, Mexico, for the next couple of weeks, and I plan to be incredibly idle. So, no blog posts, no Facebook posts, no tweets! The next issue of Flavourful Saskatoon will be on October 15.
