“To awaken quite alone in a strange town, is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world.” – Freya Stark

This issue of Flavourful is coming to you from Marseille, France, so the quote seems particularly appropriate. Two days in a new city with so much history and culture! I’m excited.

Local Happenings
FoodRenew has been selected as one of 8 startups for the upcoming Co.Labs tech incubator. If you or someone you know can help answer some questions about food waste problems in the food service and retail industry, get in touch at foodrenew@gmail.com

Two stories demonstrate the power and importance of farmers’ markets:

Simpkins Market Garden is profiled in the Saskatoon StarPhoenix: Dixon Simpkins is “a fourth-generation vegetable producer in a business that’s been a mainstay at the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market since 1976. (His grandfather, uncle and father were among the market’s founding members.)”

Kamal Hammoud, owner of Amado's Pita in Regina, started out small selling pitas at farmers’ markets. He is now baking“thousands of pitas a day to ship province-wide, including to big players like Extreme Pita and Pita Pit, and even to Alberta and Manitoba.”

Revolve Café is now selling mini cheesecakes in a jar from Artisan Sweets YXE. The cheesecakes are also available at The Hobnobber on 33rd Street West. Artisan Sweets changes her cheesecake flavours on a monthly basis.

Food for Thought
I will never find enough time to read all the books I would like to read. Here is Food Tank’s winter reading list. I’d like to read Bite Back: People Taking On Corporate Food and Winning, Sugarcane and Rum: The Bittersweet History of Labor and Life on the Yucatán Peninsula, and The Chile Pepper in China. As you can see, I’m fascinated by history and keeping it small and local.

Let’s Do It!
Schools in New York State are buying local food in “an attempt to qualify for the state’s new farm-to-school purchasing incentive.”

Walnuts, which contain Omega-3 and polyphenols, may slow cognitive decline.

Flavourful Saskatoon is a weekly Monday feature. I also post articles about food that is good, clean and fair; travel; and books. You may also enjoy EcoFriendly Sask profiling Saskatchewan nature/environmental initiatives and events.
