Local Happenings
Our Farm has confirmed they will be on Broadway Avenue starting Saturday, July 6.
Here is an interesting article about Edmonton farmers' markets with many applications to Saskatoon - indoor/outdoor, one day/multi-day, farmers' market/public market, municipal support/no support - and the impact these decisions have on the vendors.
The Halifax Mobile Food Market uses a bus to take fresh, affordable food to neighbourhoods with limited access to healthy food. CHEP Fresh Food Markets provide a similar service, setting up weekly markets in various locations around Saskatoon. What interested me about the Halifax market is that it has evolved into a community gathering space with free wifi and library services. Newcomer families have volunteered with the service developing friendships and Canadian experience to put on their resumes.
I’ve been fuelling my obsession for tea for many years now by ordering online from Camellia Sinensis in Montreal. I like the fact that I can purchase a wide variety of flavours without resorting to perfumed tea. I like learning about the farmers the owners visit on their annual trips to China, India, Taiwan, and elsewhere. The price range is wide with more options of low- to medium-priced teas than many specialty tea companies. And now they’ve improved their website providing an aroma wheel, a caffeine and antioxidant analysis, and recommendations.
Food for Thought
“We won’t build a more diverse food system until we help people develop more diverse preferences. . . . Instead of telling us to eat the broccoli, it would be a better policy approach to help us like the broccoli and give us the skills and resources to buy and cook it. . . . Alongside the right to food, we want every child to be given an opportunity to learn to like the diverse tastes that can give them a lifetime of both health and pleasure.”
The New York Senate has passed a bill requiring all state hospitals to provide plant-based meals and snacks containing no animal products or by-products. The bill is designed to assist patients in addressing heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer through a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans. As an added bonus, they’ll save money as vegetarian entrees are approximately half the price of meat-based ones.
