I’m Reading
I’ve signed up to receive three email newsletters about food. Here’s a sampling of the articles I’ve started receiving.

Vittles newsletter published an article about providing delicious food with dignity to those who are most vulnerable: “In care homes, nursing homes, assisted living spaces, hospices, hospitals and respite care centres, residents often have complex needs, limiting which foods they can eat and with what assistance. The cooks who work in these spaces play a vital role in the systems of care which, now more than ever, bear responsibility not just for looking after people, but for nourishing them, enriching their lives and laying the groundwork for them to thrive.”

In Digestion is a brand-new weekly survey of the best food media on the web. A paid subscription provides additional in-depth content.

Alicia Kennedy also has both a free and paid subscription service. In her free version, she discusses food snobs and the need to consider politics, race, culture, and economics when discussing food.

Food for Thought
A growing body of research indicates that environmental factors increase the risk of gluten intolerance.

Online
If you’re looking for a variety of new snacks, try Urthbox. I purchased a 3-month subscription for my brother at Christmas and he’s enjoyed the variety of snacks that arrived each month: “There's dried fruit, bars, crackers, heritage sunflower seeds, granola, protein powder, tea, gum, chocolate, you name it!” You have a choice of gluten-free, diet, classic, and vegan boxes. Due to an abundance of pre-Christmas orders, the first shipment was delayed, but the company compensated for it by providing a fourth free shipment.

Recipes & Cookbooks
“Not only are roses a global symbol of enduring love, they are also marvelous food and good medicine.” Here are 5 ways to add them to your culinary repertoire.

The Guardian provides a step-by-step recipe for making kimchi.

Here are some ideas for using the spices you have (or should have) lurking in your cupboard – cumin, paprika, cardamom, sumac, turmeric, and nutmeg.

The Queen’s Night Market in New York City dishes up flavours from over 90 countries from around the world. A new cookbook, The World Eats Here: Amazing Food and the Inspiring People Who Make It at New York’s Queens Night Market, tells the story behind the bazaar. The cookbook contains 88 recipes from just over 50 vendor-chefs whose cuisines reflect more than 40 countries alongside profiles of the vendors and photographs of the market.

Flavourful Saskatoon is a weekly Monday feature. I also post articles about food that is good, clean and fair; travel; and books. You may also enjoy EcoFriendly Sask profiling Saskatchewan nature/environmental initiatives and events.
