Market Sweets and Treats
New vendors at the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market:

Candy’s Stix – homemade cheesecake bites dipped in chocolate

Safari Treats and Toppers – hand-crafted candies and cakes, cake decorations and edible toppers

Please let me know if you're aware of other new vendors.

The Saskatoon Farmers’ Market will be open on Canada Day with a bouncy castle, live music, Beeper the Clown, and lots of fresh local produce.

Summer Reading
Pour yourself a cool drink, find a shady spot for your chair, and enjoy a good read as we travel from Spain to Cambodia, New Mexico, and Palestine.

Spain’s Solidarity Fridge
Several towns in Spain have set up a “solidarity fridge” where residents and restaurants can drop off leftover or unused food that would otherwise be thrown out. “This isn’t charity. It’s about making use of food that would otherwise end up in the bin,” says Alvaro Saiz, Galdakao. A restaurant owner says, “Before we used to throw away a lot of food – and it was food that was fine to eat. . . . It’s like giving our food a second chance to end up in someone’s stomach.” (The Guardian)

Cambodian Doughnuts
Over 90% of all independent doughnut shops in California are owned by Cambodians. But you’ll have to look hard to find doughnuts in Cambodia as the locals judge them far too sweet. (Lucky Peach)

Balsamic Vinegar in New Mexico
In a ghost town on the edge of the Chihuahuan Desert in New Mexico, a retired couple are following Italian methods to recreate traditional balsamic vinegar. (The Art of Eating)

Resistance is Fertile
Two very different Palestinian initiatives view the production and consumption of food as a non-violent means of resisting the Israeli occupation of the West Bank. (Gastronomica)
