Start from Scratch
Start from Scratch is a cooking class specifically designed for university students. Students learn how to make easy, budget-friendly recipes from scratch. The Saskatoon classes are run by Chef Tom Brown of Wild Cuisine Catering and will be starting up on Tuesday, October 1, on campus. Apply now online.
Flavours of India
I really enjoyed my lunch at the Flavours of India food truck located at the Saskatoon Farmers' Market last Sunday. The samosas were piping hot and accompanied by a small serving of curried chickpeas. Delicious.
Two Gun Quiche
A friend had lunch at Two Gun Quiche this past weekend. She says, “The zucchini and feta cheese quiche came steaming hot with a beautiful crust . . . the carrot dill soup of the day was amazing, and the special drink was organic blackberry iced tea. Definitely a great experience, super fast service, friendly people. I highly recommend it.”
La Prep
Another of Flavourful’s intrepid roving reporters visited La Prep in the Scotia Centre and took some photos. The restaurant is part of a North American chain offering sandwiches, salads, soups, and fresh baked goods. They offer fair trade and Rainforest Alliance certified coffee.
2nd Avenue has some excellent coffee shop options as Honey Bun Café and the Sugar Moon Cakery are two additional local businesses. Plus there’s Starbucks, which is usually open when everywhere else is closed.
Peach Ice Cream
Prairie Sun Orchard is now making peach ice cream – rich and creamy with a delicate fruit flavour.
Hanes Hummus
Hanes Hummus, a new Saskatoon-based business, was offering samples of their hummus at Dad’s Organic Market on Saturday. They have two flavours: Original and Roasted Garlic and Dill.
Day of Honey: A Memoir of Food, Love, and War
Annia Ciezadlo shares her experiences of daily life in war-torn Baghdad and Beirut, relying on food for comfort and community, in Day of Honey: A Memoir of Food, Love, and War. The book includes recipes for those of you who love to experiment.
Flavourful Saskatoon is a weekly Monday feature. I also post regular profiles of culinary entrepreneurs, new restaurants and new food products.
