It All Depends on the Weather
It’s hard to believe that last year I purchased locally grown tulips from Kaleidoscope Gardens in the middle of April. That certainly won’t happen this year with the continuing snowfall and cold temperatures. Adi says the tulips have only just popped out of the ground and it will be another 3-4 weeks before they flower.
It’s a real challenge for farmers to cope with unpredictable weather, so let’s make sure we don’t complain if our seasonal favorites are a little later than usual.
Fresh Cukes!
Grandora Gardens is back at the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market with fresh cucumbers. They also have hot pepper jelly and dried spices.

Gangsters Italian Sandwiches
Gangsters Italian Sandwiches is opening at 816 16th Street W (corner of Spadina and Avenue H) on May 10 – takeout and patio only.
Youth Cooking Camps
The Local Kitchen is listing all sorts of fun cooking programs for kids this summer. I like the sound of Pirate (Caribbean) food.
From Waste to Fresh Vegetables
I was delighted to learn that Our Farm recycles about 1000 pounds of organic waste into compost every week with supplies from their partners at Dad’s Organic Market, The Night Oven Bakery, and Venn Coffee Roasters.
Flavourful Saskatoon is a weekly Monday feature. I also post articles about food that is good, clean and fair; travel; and books. You may also enjoy EcoFriendly Sask profiling Saskatchewan environmental initiatives and events.
