New Restaurants
Wow! Saskatoon is growing so fast. I just heard about two new restaurants.

The Odd Couple Restaurant will be opening soon in Riversdale and plans to serve Chinese tapas. They’re on Instagram and Twitter.

Chef Moe Mathieu is opening Cut Casual Steakhouse and Tap Bar on 22nd Street just up from the Bessborough (where Mykonos used to be). Word is it will open on Thursday.

International Women’s Day Kick-Off, Mar. 5
The Cake Witch will be serving German pastries at the International Women’s Day Kick-Off from 7-9 pm, March 5, at the Frances Morrison Library following a screening of the film Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines with guest speaker Trish Cheveldayoff.

Saskatoon Food Council 
The Saskatoon Food Council has just released the Saskatoon Regional Food System Assessment and Action Plan. The recommendations include:
1. Create an ongoing Saskatoon Community Food Council.
2. Promote Saskatchewan foods and food production as a healthy community-minded choice.
3. Garden everywhere: expand capacity in urban agriculture.
4. Increase collaboration among producers and the development of needed supports.
5. Increase ways to obtain local food products.
6. Feed the children: substantially increase school meals and snacks.
7. Educate residents about healthy food and teach good food skills.
8. Increase availability and affordability of good food.
9. Increase people’s ability to buy good food: reduce inequality.
10. Reduce food waste in the home and reduce energy input in food production.
11. Preserve water and land for the future.
12. Build knowledge of regional food systems.

Saskatoon Soup Sisters & Broth Brothers
Soup Sisters and Broth Brothers Saskatoon launched on February 13. They will make a big batch of soup once a month at SIAST to donate to Saskatoon Interval House and Adelle House. Everyone is invited to participate. The participation fee covers the cost of ingredients and venue. The evening ends with a sit-down supper.

Food Swap
If you love to cook, bake or preserve and are eager to try new products, you may want to organize a food swap.

Salmon Confidential, Feb. 27
The Saskatchewan Eco Network is showing the film, Salmon Confidential, on February 27 at the Frances Morrison Library. The film documents one biologist’s struggle to overcome government and industry roadblocks in order to save BC’s wild salmon.

Growing Cities, Mar. 6
CHEP will be hosting a free screening of Growing Cities, a film about urban agriculture, on March 6 at The Broadway Theatre.

Kenderdine Gala, Mar. 7
The University of Saskatchewan Biology Club is organizing a Kenderdine Commemorative Gala on March 7 to assist students who were affected by the closure of Kenderdine Campus, Emma Lake.

Ken Neuman
I was saddened to learn that Ken Neuman is no longer employed by SaskMade Marketplace. He is so enthusiastic and supportive of local food producers and SaskMade Marketplace was transformed under his leadership.

Ken is looking for new opportunities in the food industry. Do give him a call if you have a possible opening.

Vegetarian Restaurant
Rumour has it that a mostly-vegetarian restaurant is planned for Weczeria’s old spot on Broadway. I’m so excited and will try to find out more details. (via @theotherHilary)

Stir-Fried Journey Through China
If you are interested in Chinese food and how it is prepared in China, I highly recommend reading Serve the People: A Stir-Fried Journey through China by Jen Lin-Liu. The American-born author goes from taking cooking classes to cooking at a noodle stand and at a high-end restaurant in Shanghai.

Creative, Healthy Recipes
If you’re looking for some fresh inspiration for healthy eating, check out My New Roots. Recipes range from Big Comfy Sweet Potato to Wild Mushroom Lentil Burgers with Cashew Garlic Sauce. Warm the Bones, Feb. 22 
SaskMade Marketplace’s monthly get-together on February 22 (10:30-4) is aimed at spreading the warmth with soup, pie and hot cider. Plus you’ll get a chance to test TuBees potential new honey flavours – will it be Ginger or Coconut (11-3)?

Cheese & Beer Night, Feb. 28
Details are now out for Prairie Sun Brewery’s Cheese & Beer Night on February 28. There will be over 25 different cheeses, paired with 10 different Prairie Sun beers, a fondue corner, cheese and chocolate, cooking demos, door prizes, and much, much more. Only 50 tickets are available so buy yours right away.


Don’t Panic!
I arrived at Earth Bound Bakery and the door was locked with signs saying they were undergoing renovations. Oh, no! How could I make it through the week without a croissant and a crusty loaf of bread!

Never fear. They’ve set up a counter in the doorway to Dad’s Organic Grocery so you can still get your fill of goodies. Trent has even started making slices of focaccia.

Fresh Turmeric 
A basket of gnarly roots with an apricot glow caught my eye in Dad’s Organic Grocery. It looked like ginger, but was much more colourful. What could it be? It was organic turmeric root. Turmeric was first used as a dye and later for its medicinal properties. Here are some ideas on how to use fresh turmeric.

Pennywise, Pound Foolish
I love Cara Cara oranges. But they’re expensive. So when I saw regular oranges for a quarter of the price at Dad’s (both were organic), I bought them instead. What a mistake. The cheaper ones were full of seeds and completely lacking in flavour. I’ll stick to Cara Cara oranges in future, though I may try some Blood Oranges as well because I love the bright colour.

Red Wine Chocolate Cake
Wine and chocolate – how could it be anything but delicious! Check out this recipe from BC Wineguys in Nelson, BC (the friendliest wine store in the West).


Food  Hackathon
Food people recently met with techie builders for a 48-hour hackathon/startup weekend in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia. Their goal was to rethink production, distribution and consumption and develop creative solutions to current agri-food challenges. Here’s one account of the weekend. Wouldn’t it be great to have a similar event in Saskatoon?

Has Craft Beer Gone Too Far?
As you know, I’m a huge supporter of craft beer. But this quiz makes me wonder whether it’s becoming a touch too extreme. A beer made with yeast from the brewmaster’s beard – seriously? Yuck! And I won’t even mention some of the other weird and wonderful things that have been made into beer.

Seedy Saturday, Regina, Mar. 1 
Seedy Saturday, Regina, will be held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church from 10 am to 2 pm. Lots of fun activities for kids as well as speakers on making baby food with garden vegetables and a plant-based diet.


Grandmothers 4 Grandmothers, Mar. 7
Grandmothers 4 Grandmothers is holding a fundraising dinner on March 7 at the Western Development Museum. Tickets are $40 and are available at McNally Robinson.

Fruit Honey
Grandpa’s Garden in Coran, SK, has just launched a new product – fruit-flavoured honey. Most of the fruit and the honey come from their own garden. Flavours are: cherry, haskap, raspberry and strawberry.

City Perks
City Perks coffee shop is now open until 10 pm, Monday through Saturday. They’ve expanded their Sunday breakfast menu to include Mushrooms Florentine, Waffles and Eggs Benedict. And they’ve started selling artisan products, such as olive oil.

Einkorn
Sarah Galvin, a market vendor and Slow Food member in Swift Current, has been experimenting with using einkorn flour. She’s put a lot of effort into making a good loaf of bread, tricky, as einkorn is extremely low in gluten. I definitely recommend checking out Sarah’s blog if you are interested in using this grain.

Einkorn is an ancient variety of wheat and is available from Daybreak Mill in Estevan.

Terra Madre 2014
Terra Madre and Salone del Gusto will be held in Turin, October 23-27. This is an amazing opportunity to talk to producers and taste hand-crafted food from around the world. Slow Food Saskatoon will be sending a delegate and members often receive reduced rates. If you’re not yet a Slow Food Saskatoon member, now is the time to join!


Restaurant Reviews
 I am always eager to try out Saskatoon’s new restaurants. Unfortunately, two recent visits have been disappointing.

There are only two vegetarian entrees and an appetizer on Bottega Trattoria’s menu. Both the pasta and gnocchi were swimming in a creamy sauce – way too rich and bland.

In my opinion, you should only go to State and Main if you want to watch sports on their multitude of screens. I had a veggie burger and fries – neither were made from scratch and neither had much flavour. The menu – and atmosphere – at Spadina Freehouse is vastly superior.

On a more positive note, I enjoyed the lunch buffet at Spicy Bite on 3rd Avenue on Saturday. There were four vegetarian options plus side dishes and desserts.
